Responding to today’s official launch of the Digital Markets Unit, which will sit within the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), Andy Carter MP, Chair of the Media Group, said:
“I welcome the steps the CMA has taken to stamp out monopolies in the online market. Particularly in light of covid, we need to make it easier for small businesses to break into consumer markets online, levelling the playing field and giving entrepreneurs a better chance of success.
“I’m also interested to see how we can do more to support local media We see too many platforms ending up as huge conglomerates which often lose their original spark. Through innovation and competition, I’m confident the CMA can provide an online space which is better for both business and consumers.”
The All-Party Parliamentary Media Group will seek to collaborate with and scrutinise the new Digital Markets Unit, the broader industry and public policy to ensure the sector can thrive on its successes, confronts its challenges, and continue to meet the needs and standards of British audiences into the future.
The Media Group is a forum for discussion within Parliament on public policy as it affects the media sector. An impartial organisation, the Group meets regularly to provide a useful interface between Parliament, the industry and other key stakeholders, making a valuable contribution to raising the quality of debate on media policy.
